Nothing to tell between neighbours

Saturday, 9 October 2004

[1] Bosnia-Herzegovina held Serbia and Montenegro to a draw in the neighbours' first major competitive match as independent nations.

Jevric saves

[2] In front of 30,000 fans at the Koševo stadium, the home side made the early running in this FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 7 fixture and Elvir Bolic came close on 16 minutes, forcing Dragoslav Jevric to save his long-range volley. Eleven minutes later, Jevric was called into action again, this time to block Ivica Grlic's strong shot.

Late chances

[3] Serbia and Montenegro, who won two and drew one of these teams' previous friendly encounters, were unable to force a clear-cut chance before the break, and it was a similar story in the second half. Jevric was called upon yet again, this time to save from Elvir Baljic, and only in the final eight minutes did home goalkeeper Almir Tolja have to make stops of his own from Zvonimir Vukic and Ognjen Koroman.

Next fixtures

[4] The point takes Bosnia-Herzegovina, who drew their previous qualifier with Spain, into fourth place above their next opponents Belgium, who they visit next year on 26 March. Serbia and Montenegro are back in action on Wednesday, when they could go top with victory at home to the side they beat last month in their own opening game, San Marino.
