Liechtenstein reach fresh landmark

Wednesday, 13 October 2004

[1] Just four days after a 2-2 draw with Portugal gave Liechtenstein their first FIFA World Cup point, the Alpine nation created another milestone as they triumphed away from home for the first time since entering international football in 1994.

Record books rewritten

[2] Since that first trip to Northern Ireland - a 4-1 defeat - Liechtenstein's 33 official internationals on foreign soil had yielded 32 defeats and just one draw, ironically a 3-3 tie in Luxembourg in April 2002. Today's 4-0 win also breaks Liechtenstein's record goal tally in a single match, again previously set in Luxembourg, and marks only their second competitive victory after a 2-1 defeat of Azerbaijan almost six years ago to the day in UEFA EURO 2000™ qualifying.

First-half goals

[3] Martin Stocklasa, who scored all three goals when Liechtenstein drew in Luxembourg two years ago, opened the scoring on 41 minutes. By half-time the lead had doubled through Franz Burgmeier, also on target against Portugal in Vaduz at the weekend.

Victory sealed

[4] Mario Frick claimed the third goal on 57 minutes and Burgmeier struck again near the end to complete the victory. Luxembourg, who have now lost all five of their qualifiers, next welcome Portugal on 17 November. That day Liechtenstein have a home fixture against the side level with them in the group, Latvia.

It has been a tremendous week for Liechtenstein
